“Nigella” is a loose-fitting wraparound cardigan knit from the top down.
Starting from the shawl collar, Nigella is knit in two symmetrical halves and decorated with a stitch that combines lace and cables for an interesting effect.
After working the back of the collar, the back is set up: the number of stitches needed is cast on and, at the same time, the stitches along the long side of the back of the collar are picked up. The back is worked top down and it is shaped with a series of short rows, working flat to the end of the yoke. At this point, the stitches are transferred to a piece of scrap yarn. When the sweater has been completed, the back
will be slightly longer than the front thanks to this construction technique. Continue by picking up the stitches for the fronts along the cast-on edge and the collar stitches left on the waste yarn; the two fronts are worked separately, shaping the collar with a series of increases.
The three pieces are then joined, the armholes are shaped and the cardigan is knit to the desired length, continuing with the increases along the neckline opening. At this point a rib stitch border is added.
Stitches along the armholes are picked up to knit the sleeves, which also are completed by a wide rib stitch border.
